A Note on the Instrument
No recordings were used in the making of this instrument. Every voice is synthesised in your browser from first principles — a buzzing source, a turbulent one, a resonant cavity that narrows as the pressure falls, and an irregular flutter that keeps the whole thing from sounding like a bassoon.
This is not a technical boast. It is why the eight voices can be tuned toward the dry and the woody rather than the merely loud, and why no two strikes of the same voice are identical: each one re-rolls its pitch, its length, and its flutter within a range. The instrument is incapable of repeating itself exactly, which is true of the original.
